Persuasion (The Heirs of Watson Island #2) by Martina Boone

Book Summery (Via Goodreads):Grieving the death of her godfather and haunted by her cousin Cassie’s betrayal, Barrie returns from a trip to San Francisco to find the Watson plantation under siege. Ghost-hunters hope to glimpse the ancient spirit who sets the river on fire each night, and reporters chase rumors of a stolen shipment of Civil War gold that may be hidden at Colesworth Place. The chaos turns dangerous as Cassie hires a team of archeologists to excavate beneath the mansion ruins. Because more is buried there than treasure.
A stranger filled with magic arrives at Watson’s Landing claiming that the key to the Watson and Beaufort gifts—and the Colesworth curse—also lies beneath the mansion. With a mix of threats and promises, the man convinces Barrie and Cassie to cast a spell there at midnight. But what he conjures may have deadly consequences.
While Barrie struggles to make sense of the escalating peril and her growing and forbidden feelings for Eight Beaufort, it’s impossible to know whom to trust and what to fight for—Eight or herself. Millions of dollars and the fate of the founding families is at stake. Now Barrie must choose between what she feels deep in her heart and what will keep Watson’s Landing safe in this stunning addition to a series filled with “decadent settings, mysterious magic, and family histories rife with debauchery” (Kirkus Reviews, on Compulsion).

Book Review:
Reading this book was like coming home. I absolutely adored Complusion. It's something about those Southern settings that I just love. The rich culture and history just adds so much to the overall story arc. The continuation of the Watson's, Beaufort's, and Colesworth's tale is just captivating. Eight and Barrie's relationship heats up, but is also under a lot of stress. Barrie is keeping a lot of secrets from her family and loved ones which separates her from the rest of the characters. While I enjoyed the overall story, it didn't feel complete. There are a lot of unanswered questions and the plot doesn't feel fully fleshed out. There is a mystery man who adds a lot of color and intrigue, but his purpose isn't fully explained. Also, Eight and Barrie have some serious decisions to make regarding their relationship, but nothing is ever fully decided. This seems like a book to stretch the story into another book, but I don't see one in the makings yet. I hope this is just an oversight. I adore this series and am looking forward to the continuation of the story!

Thanks to Simon Pulse for this copy.

Compulsion (The Heirs of Watson Island #1) by Martina Boone

Book Summery (Via Goodreads): All her life, Barrie Watson has been a virtual prisoner in the house where she lived with her shut-in mother. When her mother dies, Barrie promises to put some mileage on her stiletto heels. But she finds a new kind of prison at her aunt's South Carolina plantation instead--a prison guarded by an ancient spirit who long ago cursed one of the three founding families of Watson Island and gave the others magical gifts that became compulsions.
Stuck with the ghosts of a generations-old feud and hunted by forces she cannot see, Barrie must find a way to break free of the family legacy. With the help of sun-kissed Eight Beaufort, who knows what Barrie wants before she knows herself, the last Watson heir starts to unravel her family's twisted secrets. What she finds is dangerous: a love she never expected, a river that turns to fire at midnight, a gorgeous cousin who isn't what she seems, and very real enemies who want both Eight and Barrie dead.

Book Review:
Where to start...First of all, let me admit to you I am a sucker for a good supernatural story that is based in the South. It's amazing to me that the author, Martina Boone, is not southern, but actually was born in Prague. This story hits all my favorable points. The main character is flawed, yet determined. Eight makes for a great supporting character and potential love interest. I would love for Pru's back story to be fleshed out a bit more. The Watson manor is a character within itself, there's much more to be explored. There is so much secrecy and suspense, it's near impossible to set this book down. If you're looking for good mystery set in the South, look no further. I'm very much looking forward to the sequel.

Cover Art Commentary:
I love this cover. It's simplistic, yet elegant. The color provides a nice background. The simple white design provides a nice polish.
