Pantomime by Laura Lam

Book Summery (Via Goodreads): R.H. Ragona’s Circus of Magic is the greatest circus of Ellada. Nestled among the glowing blue Penglass – remnants of a mysterious civilisation long gone – are wonders beyond the wildest imagination. It’s a place where anything seems possible, where if you close your eyes you can believe that the magic and knowledge of the vanished Chimeras is still there. It’s a place where anyone can hide.

Iphigenia Laurus, or Gene, the daughter of a noble family, is uncomfortable in corsets and crinoline, and prefers climbing trees to debutante balls. Micah Grey, a runaway living on the streets, joins the circus as an aerialist’s apprentice and soon becomes the circus’s rising star. But Gene and Micah have balancing acts of their own to perform, and a secret in their blood that could unlock the mysteries of Ellada.

Book Review:
I have never been one for the circus, as I am terrified of clowns (true story). However, books like Water for Elephants and The Night Circus have instilled in me a love for all circus-related books. There is an air of mystery and magic that comes with the circus, so when I had the opportunity to read and review Laura Lam's upcoming Pantomime, I was ecstatic! Perhaps Lam's strongest element of this story is the world building. In no-time, I was caught up in Micha's and Gene's world. The descriptions of the circus are vivid and magical. I could see myself sitting in the big top, watching the acrobats while nibbling on floss candy. The cast of characters, both in and out of the circus, really made this story pop. I adored Gene's brother especially. Willing to support his sister no matter the cost. Character development is another prominent element in the story. I was able to relate to Gene, who was not cast in the cookie-cutter mold society (as well as her parents) had expected of her. If you've ever felt like an outsider, afraid to show people the "real you," you'll be able to relate to Gene. It was exciting to see Micah grow out of his shell, exploring and finding himself among the chaos of the circus. Overall this was an engrossing read. The only part that fell short was the ending, I would have like a bit more expansion...perhaps in a follow-up somewhere down the road? ;)

This is my honest review.

Cover Art Commentary:
LOVE this cover! I like how the character's eyes pop through the mask. Make sure to check out the subtle, yet essential big top in the background!
